A tractor works for many years, so a few good questions now save trouble later.
Power and implements
Start from the heaviest implement you pull and the soil you work. Ask for the engine power and the power available at the power take-off (PTO), which is what drives implements such as balers and rotary tillers. For example, the Kubota M7060 page lists engine and PTO power, and the Case IH Puma 185 page lists its engine size and power.
Drive, hitch and hydraulics
- Two-wheel or four-wheel drive for your ground
- Three-point hitch category and lift capacity
- Hydraulic pump flow and the number of remote valves
Cab and comfort
A cab protects the driver from dust and sun on long days. An open station costs less. Decide based on the hours you work.
Parts, service and finance
Ask who services the tractor near you and how quickly parts arrive. If your income comes at harvest, read about seasonal repayments and ask lenders what they allow.
